CPAP Plaintiffs Suffer Anxiety From Not Knowing How Severe Their Lung Problems May Be
The list of breathing problems allegedly caused by the Phillips CPAP sleep apnea machines is growing
Monday, November 8, 2021 - A Phillips CPAP cancer lawsuit filed recently tells of a New York man claiming that the Phillips CPAP machine's sound abatement foam malfunctioned caused him to develop Asthma, COPD, and a tumor in his throat. The man required surgery and hospitalization because of his condition. According to Aboutlawsuits.com, the man used the machine every day for about one year between 2017 and 2018 and then "began suffering respiratory problems, blood clots, headaches, nightmares and bouts of dizziness. That same month, doctors diagnosed Edwards with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and found a large tumor in his throat which needed to be surgically removed." Worse of all, the plaintiff also alleges to be suffering from anxiety over not knowing the full extent of how seriously he has been injured by using the sleep apnea machine. Experts have said they think the particles, chemicals, and gasses the CPAP devices produce could be carcinogenic and causes lung cancer. The New York lawsuit joins hundreds of others with similar injuries and accusations against Phillips for selling a medical device containing a physical defect.
The most prevalent type of lung disease is Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD occurs in 10-15 percent of people that have sleep apnea but is now being blamed on the sleep apnea machine, according to HealthLine.com. Obesity is the leading cause of obstructive sleep apnea involving COPD. COPD may include having emphases, chronic bronchitis, and eventually lung cancer. Having COPD included all the symptoms of having untreated sleep apnea including waking up frequently during the night from loud snoring, waking up from gasping for air from being unable to breathe, and of course all of the effects the next day from not being able to get a good night's sleep. Chronic COPD may reduce blood oxygen levels leading to high blood pressure and sudden death from a heart attack. Healthline lists other COPD-related pulmonary maladies as being "abnormal heartbeat, right-sided heart failure, high blood pressure, pump art hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs), and possibly stroke." A stroke can cause instant death or paralysis by cutting off the blood supply to the brain.
The Phillips DreamStation recall is underway and recalls of other models are to follow. Up to 3 million units of sleep apnea devices were recalled due to the devices malfunctioning and releasing toxic particles into the machine's airway and then directly into the user's lungs, not for only one breath, but the entire 8 hours of use. Individual Phillips CPAP lawsuits allege that plaintiffs have developed lung disease from using the machine without warning. Phillips is also being sued for $200 million by SoClean Inc. for allegedly blaming the cleaning solution company for causing the sound abatement foam problems. SoClean claims to have lost hundreds of millions of dollars in sales because of the publicity surrounding the Phillips allegations.
