Royal Phillips Battles SoClean For Responsibility In Causing Lung Disease And Disorders

Lung problems and difficulty breathing may be the result of the SoClean ozone solution.

Tuesday, October 19, 2021 - The CEO of Royal Phillips, maker of CPAP sleep apnea devices, blames the problems user are experiencing on the unapproved cleaning solution people have been using that reacts with and degrades the machines sound abatement foam and not on an inherent design flaw. More than a year before the Phillips CPAP recall, Royal Phillips warned users, advising them of the potential hazard that using SoClean cleaning solution might have and that if a user chose to use the unapproved cleaning solution, they may void the warranty and absolve the company of liability should they get sick. According to HME News, "In early 2020, Philips said in a letter responding to a customer's request for written guidance on the use of CPAP cleaning devices that using SoClean on its DreamStation would not automatically void the warranty, but that the company "reserved the right to void a warranty if it is determined that the use of SoClean caused a defect for which a device otherwise under warranty was returned." More than 3 million Phillips CPAP devices have been recalled or are to be repaired because of reports that the sound abatement foam degrades and sends toxic, carcinogenic particles, chemicals, and gasses into the device's airway to be inhaled by the patient throughout the night while the device is used. SoClean Inc., the maker of the CPAP cleaning solution has denied that their product is the cause of the sleep apnea machines problems and has launched a lawsuit to counter the allegation. Reuters reported, "Dutch medical equipment company Koninklijke Philips NV has been hit with a $200 million lawsuit accusing them of deceiving the public and the healthcare industry by falsely linking the problems with its recently recalled sleep-apnea machines to ozone-based cleaning methods". SoClean claims that the disparaging remarks made by the Phillips CEO are designed to deflect attention away from their negligence and onto SoClean, and has caused the company's sales to plummet. SoClean alleges that Philips CPAP Cancer may be due to a poor choice of materials chosen for the sound abatement foam and inherent design flaws.

On June 14, 2021, the website SleepAndAttentionDisorders.com advised their readers of the complaints made to the FDA of health problems that resulted from using SoClean ozone products. In an article titled "SoClean May Be Dangerous To Your Health" they wrote, "Patients have reported to the FDA that the ozone from such cleaning devices has caused cough, breathing difficulty, nasal irritation, headaches, asthma attacks, and other breathing complaints. Ozone gas (used in SoClean and other devices) does kill bacteria." These breathing difficulties parallel the symptoms CPAP patients have reported. The article goes on to show that users of Phillips CPAP machines were advised that the SoClean solution could degrade the sound abatement foam. "In 2020, the FDA warned that devices using ozone or UV light and claiming to clean CPAP devices might be harmful to patients. The FDA also warned that these devices are marketed illegally. Now Philips (the maker of Philips Respironics CPAP devices) has warned that ozone in unapproved cleaning devices may degrade the sound abatement foam in some of its CPAP devices. This may cause patient exposure to chemical emissions from the foam."
