Unapproved Ozone Cleaning Contraptions May Be A More Likely Cause of CPAP Airway Contamination

Continuous Positive Airway (CPAP) machines are a life-saving breakthrough medical device providing millions of people a solid 8-hour night's sleep and many benefits the next day

Wednesday, April 20, 2022 - Having a safe and restful night's sleep allows the CPAP user the ability to perform the next day to the fullest of their abilities. There are countless other benefits of being well-rested such as performing better (and safer) at work and improving relationships with spouses and children. Phillips Respironics, a Dutch company and maker of the Phillips line of sleep apnea devices, is accused by plaintiffs in hundreds of Phillips CPAP lawsuits of failing to warn millions of their customers that the device's sound abatement foam may deteriorate into carcinogenic particles, chemicals, and gasses and be inhaled repeatedly during the night by the machine's users. It is coming to light, however, that the problems with the machine's noise cancellation foam may be due to using the SoClean Ozone cleaning solution. Phillips has accused SoClean of marketing their cleaning solution for use with the Phillips sleep apnea machines, but Phillips Respironics CEO repeatedly warned users that the SoClean solution was not approved for use on the Phillips brands of sleep apnea and respiration machines.

The Phillips SoClean Ozone cleaning solution warning was largely due to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warnings that Ozone cleaning solutions were not FDA approved and could result in catastrophic health consequences for users. According to SleepandAttentionDisorders.com, "The FDA has stated that exposure to high levels of ozone may worsen patients' existing respiratory disease or increase the chance of respiratory infection. UV light could cause burns, eye damage, or increase the risk of skin cancer. Patients have reported to the FDA that the ozone from such "cleaning devices" has caused cough, breathing difficulty, nasal irritation, headaches, asthma attacks, and other breathing complaints." All one has to do is to visit SoClean.com and navigate to their "sleep equipment" cleaning page to see that using the device could cause a problem. The Ozone sleep equipment cleaning product requires that one place the vital components of the sleep apnea device inside of it where ultraviolet light theoretically sterilizes the equipment. It is not a stretch of the imagination to infer that ultraviolet light may also damage the foams and plastics that the sleep apnea device is made from. There is growing sentiment that unauthorized Ozone and UV light cleaning products may be responsible for accusations of Phillips CPAP cancer.

A video on YouTube produced by the Food and Drug Administration warns of the dangers of using Ozone contraptions to clean CPAP sleep apnea machines. The first point the FDA makes is to make sure to clean the mask and air tubes regularly with soap and water following the manufacturer's instructions precisely. "Ozone gas aka activated oxygen and UV light products have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA. To date, the FDA has not authorized the sale of products that use ozone gas or Ultraviolet (UV) light to clean, disinfect, or sanitize CPAP devices (continuous positive airway) products," according to the FDA video warning. The FDA tells viewers that they do not know if the Ozone cleaning products work as advertised.
