Sleep Apnea Patients Continue To Use Their CPAP Device Because They Are Unable To Function The Next Day Without It

Getting a good night's rest is more important than it sounds when the person has to function at a high level at work or play every day

Wednesday, October 27, 2021 - Sleep apnea doctors are quite aware of the dilemma their patients are facing now that the Phillips CPAP recall is underway. On the one hand, patients rely on using the device every night to keep from choking and snoring so loudly as to wake themselves up continually throughout the night. On the other hand, sleep apnea patients take the FDA's warning seriously to stop using their Phillips CPAP machine that is being recalled because it may be leaching carcinogen substances. Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition that can have life-threatening consequences if left untreated. The MayoClinic describes the condition. "Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. If you snore loudly and feel tired even after a full night's sleep, you might have sleep apnea." Doctors are at a loss as to which way to advise sleep apnea patients and warn that discontinuing using the device that is under recall could have catastrophic consequences. Patients are forced to weigh the risks of using a faulty medical device with the benefits it might offer. Ventilators that are being recalled are in high demand by people that have been hospitalized for COVID 19. One sleep apnea physician recently told KHSB41 News in Kansas City of his experience with sleep apnea patients. "Probably about a third of my patients, they have such severe apnea, such severe sleepiness, that they continue to wear the machine even though this notice is out because they basically aren't functional without it," explained Stevens, a pulmonologist at the University of Kansas Health System."

The problem with the machine is that the foam insulation that was intended to muffle the noise coming from the machine degrades and leaches toxic, carcinogenic particles, chemicals, and gasses into the devices airway and then directly into the user's lungs for as long as one is hooked up to the machine. Philips CPAP cancer lawsuits have been filed by hundreds of customers that allegedly have developed lung cancer and other lung disorders like asthma from the machine's nightly toxic discharge. The CEO of Phillips denies that the machine is malfunctioning and instead directs blame on SoClean Inc., the manufacturer of ozone-related cleaning solutions that customers use to clean their Phillips CPAP machines against the advice of the manufacturer. The CEO may have a point as in February of 2020, the Food and Drug Administration issued an official warning to users that using ozone cleaning solutions are illegal when marketed for the purpose of cleaning of CPAP machines, and also that the FDA cannot vouch for their safety or effectiveness. Instead, the FDA recommends people use old fashion soap and water to clean the device. The FDA Safety Communication read as follows: "devices claiming to clean, disinfect or sanitize continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices or accessories (such as masks, tubing, headgear) using ozone gas or ultraviolet (UV) light are not legally marketed for this use by the FDA in the U.S., and as such, their safety and effectiveness for use with CPAP devices and accessories is unknown."
